OHI OFFERS DISABLED ADULTS SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE

By Rich Romero

OHI, Hermon – About 100 people, most of whom are from OHI, descend upon Camp Capella in Dedham for a five-day summer camp experience Sunday to Thursday.

For the past four years at the lakeside summer camp on Phillips Lake, OHI rents the use of the camp and its facilities to offer adults living with disabilities an affordable summer vacation. OHI employees, volunteers and board members act as camp directors, counselors, activities directors and cooks.

OHI is a Maine-based, public nonprofit organization providing supports and services for the past 35 years to people with intellectual disabilities, autism and mental illness. OHI provides 24-hour residential services and various community services for about 400 people with these disabilities to live productively in their communities in six Maine counties. OHI also provides permanent housing for adults with disabilities, and professional development training for people, including family members, caregivers and support workers. The organization also owns and operates the Brewer Area Food Pantry. Renovations are currently in progress on Bonnie’s Bargain Basement, Turning Deals into Meals, in the basement of the food pantry. The retail thrift shop is expected to open in October 2014 with proceeds supporting the BAFP.
