PRISONS OF THE MIND—THE EXPERIENCE OF HEARING VOICES

Providing supports in the mental health field may require assisting individuals who hear voices….without the full appreciation of what it is like.  This workshop is a simulated experience of hearing voices that are distressing.  It is designed to  teach us to empathize with the challenges  faced by people with schizophrenia or other disabilities as they attempt to function in every day life.  The workshop has an instructional component as well as a unique hands-on  approach.

This course is designed for persons who do not hear voices.  If you do hear voices, you may choose to limit your involvement as suggested by your mental health provider.  This course simulates hearing voices, which can be distressing to participants.

Objectives

Þ What are auditory hallucinations?

Þ How can you best support and facilitate coping strategies for the person who hears voices?

Þ Should you agree with statements by a person that you know are untrue?
