This service helps adults with mental health challenges, or mental health and substance abuse challenges (co-occurring disorders), to increase their independence by learning skills. It is teaching-based. Service recipients can be living on their own, with family or in residential treatment in certain cases, or may be homeless.

Through the process of assessment and treatment plan development, interventions are tailored to meet individual needs. Natural supports are incorporated to the degree the service recipient desires.

Support may include instruction on skills like:

  • Accessing community resources
  • Connecting and maintaining relationships with natural supports
  • Teaching people to develop and maintain healthy relationships with peers in the community
  • Skills for independent living such as:
    • Using public transportation
    • Budgeting
    • Accessing 12-step programs
    • Selecting and participating in educational activities
    • Selecting and participating in vocational activities
    • Selecting and participating in social activities
  • Symptom management
  • Stress management
  • Self-advocacy
  • Requesting workplace accommodations
  • Problem-solving
  • Resolving conflict
  • Overcoming social isolation and withdrawal
  • Medication administration and monitoring
