Abused and Betrayed in Maine

The Maine Developmental Disabilities Council, in collaboration with the University of Maine at Augusta, invites you to a Maine State Forum addressing the sexual abuse of people with developmental disabilities.

We Hope You Can Join Us Wednesday, April 25, 2018 6:00—7:30pm Jewett Hall University of Maine Augusta. This event is free, open to the public, and does not require registration.

People with intellectual disabilities are sexually assaulted at rates more than seven times those for people without disabilities. This is an alarming statistic, and the DD Council regularly hears from people with disabilities, their families, services providers and community members who want to know what they can do.

The panel discussion will address some of the issues raised in the acclaimed NPR series “Abused and Betrayed”. What are the risks and realities? What can we to respond to and prevent it from happening? What is happening here in Maine?

The Maine State Forum hosts policymakers to speak at the University of Maine at Augusta on topics of interest to the Maine community. The question and answer format after the presentation allows attendees to learn and interact with policymakers in the news. The Maine State Forum is funded by a UMA Research and Innovation grant, and is coordinated by Assistant Professor Sharon McMahon Sawyer of the Justice Studies Department.

This event addresses the issue of sexual assault and may not be appropriate for all audiences.

Please feel free to share this invitation, particularly with people in the Augusta area.
